Light vs Midsize vs Heavy Jet: Which Private Jet Should You Charter?
9 October 2026 · 6 min read
Picking the right aircraft is the easiest way to control the cost of a private flight. Too small and you'll need a fuel stop; too big and you pay for seats and range you don't use.
Turboprops
6–9 seats and short range. Excellent for island hops and short runways, and the cheapest option per hour.
Light jets
4–7 seats with ranges up to roughly 3,700 km. Perfect for short to medium flights such as Malta–Catania or Malta–Ibiza. Cabins are comfortable but you can't stand up straight.
Midsize and super midsize
6–10 seats with stand-up cabins, a proper lavatory and more luggage space. Super midsize jets like the Challenger 350 can fly Malta to Dubai nonstop.
Heavy jets
10–16 seats, separate cabin zones, flat beds and intercontinental range. The choice for London–New York or Europe–Asia.
Quick rule of thumb
- Under 2 hours, small group: turboprop or light jet
- 2–4 hours: light or midsize jet
- 4–7 hours: super midsize
- Transatlantic or 7+ hours: heavy jet
